Tessa was the only one of the eight that was over eighteen when they got busted, so she was facing some hard prison time. Fortunately she was given the choice to enlist in the military instead, and so she joined the Army. It seemed to be a lot better deal at first, until she was deployed to Afghanistan into combat. Still she had it better than the ground pounders, by her being a helo pilot.
After her deployment she had served so well, and honorably that the brass gave her a rare opportunity; to become a test pilot. It wasn’t at all what she was expecting, not by a shot.
